Magnetism of Iron and Steel Ships by T.A. Lyons 1884

Naval Professional Papers No. 17, Magnetism of Iron and Steel Ships By Lieutenant Commander T.A. Lyons explains the various ways in which the compass is affected. This is a technical work in which there are many tables, charts, and plates that pull out as well as well as text.

I believe this to be a first edition. A small page inserted between the front fly leaf and the title page lists, "corrections to be made in Professional Paper no. 17 - Magnetism of Iron and Steel Ships" It is a list of 19 corrections the author has specified to be made from pages 27 to page 115. So this may be a very, very early edition, but that is just conjecture on my part.

The research I've done seems to indicate that there were not very many copies of this book printed, and probably VERY few have survived intact for 140 years. There are new re-prints of this work available, but this is the original blue hard cover with gilt lettering from 1884.
